Our 2023 round-up

21 December 2023

2023 has seen a number of mergers and acquisitions in the telecommunications sector, which has been the cause of uncertainty and delays for many. Even with this in the background we’ve found ways to be productive. At G Comms we’ve made every effort to find and implement improvements to benefit our business and, most importantly, our customers.

Speaking of which, the feedback we received from our customers this year has helped us to focus our efforts. This is how we continuously improve our alignment with customers’ processes and systems, ensuring our service is the best it can be. We’ve been proudly demonstrating these improvements during client visits, and we thank everyone for the positive feedback we’ve received so far. For those of you who haven’t visited us, here’s a round up of some of the improvements we’ve made in 2023.

Value added solutions

Since the introduction of our pre-stage, test and screen area we’ve had some interesting and beneficial conversations around the pros and cons. With pre-staging equipment ahead of delivery our intention is to reduce time and cost, while improving on site health and safety. We also believe it can improve the consistency of quality standards and increase performance.

At G Comms we acknowledge that pre-staging won’t be ideal for every project. Even so the trials have proved very successful and so we’ll continue to grow this service in partnership with our customers.

This year we’ve increased our investment in our cable assembly area too. The upgrade to our fibre optic and power cable area allows us to support customers with quick turnaround times, and to provide bespoke assemblies even for late and urgent requests.

A new partnership

It’s with pleasure that we can announce the formalisation of an already strong partnership with UK Teleport, one of telecoms most reputable specialised logistics providers. We’ve strengthened our ties by acquiring a shareholding in UK Teleport, which is an exciting new chapter for us both. G Comms customers will benefit from increased logistics quality control, capacity and flexibility. We’ll all benefit from their expertise and knowledge on site from early 2024.

The G Comms team

At its core the strength of any company comes from its people. We’ve been delighted that our continued success allows us to continue investing in people, and we’ve focussed attention on our senior management team.

Back in January 2023 we welcomed Chris Turner as our operations director. He has been working alongside Claire for the past year and his expertise around processes and systems have been invaluable. With the support of the management team, Chris has made many improvements and helped to increase our efficiency. We are pleased to announce that Chris takes the position of Managing Director as of January 2024, while Claire becomes CEO.

With our day-to-day operations in Chris’s safe hands, Claire will focus her efforts on strategy, growth and further innovation. Chris has appointed several new members to the senior management team, including: Lee Cowan as operations manager, Toni Healy as inventory manager and Amie Reece as customer compliance manager. We are also actively recruiting for a full time SHEQ manager to join our team.

Claire will have John Greenwood (non-executive director), Shane Ward as Sales and technical lead, and Chris McNally as bid and tender manager. With Chris in place, Claire plans to spend more time with our customers, discovering ways to align our strategies with theirs.

Engagement and charitable efforts

Our “people engagement” is headed up by Delilah Walton, who’s also responsible for internal HR and communications. She’s leading some fantastic initiatives, like our G Community. The aims of which include: bringing our team together for charity fundraising, or finding ways to reduce our environmental impact.

We’ve supported Save the Children with their Christmas Jumper day. We raised £500 and had fun doing it. Recently we joined with PLOTT to raise funds for a local dog rescue charity, and we’re currently collecting supplies for our local homeless charity.

Accreditations

In September, we had our Investors in People annual review. We have made great progress in employee engagement and communication. This was achieved through some well received initiatives, such as: Good Catches – for any near misses, hazard spotting, and staff suggestions, and Employee of the Month. These incentives recognise, value and motivate our team. Check LinkedIn for updates.

In June we had three days of audits by the British Assessment Bureau. Their feedback was excellent, with no minor or major non-conformances identified. We maintain our ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditations. Well done to team G Comms!

Here’s to 2024

As we close out this year and prepare for the next, we’re going to focus on the positives, and take the lessons learned on board. This, we’re sure, will help to make next year even more successful for ourselves, and our customers. We very much look forward to seeing what we can achieve together next year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our team, customers, suppliers and partners for their continued support and wish you all a very enjoyable and peaceful festive break! Here’s to 2024 – better together!
